Western Pride Women are delighted to announce major re-signings ahead their clash with UQ at this weekend’s PlayStation® 4 National Premier League Girl’s pre-season carnival at Briggs Rd Sporting Complex.

Star goalkeeper Kirsten Veeren has returned as captain behind a familiar defensive unit of youngsters Jasmin Graham, Montanna McAvoy and Emma Barnes, and experienced fullback Alicia Cole.

Club stalwart Melissah Von Bischoffshausen will continue to pull strings in midfield while late-season recruit Caitlin Devin has elected to continue with the Green and White.

New Senior Women coach Belinda Kitching said she was pleased how the returning players were taking on the challenge of a change in playing style.

“The girls have had a great attitude and it is showing in our play,” Kitching said.

“They are enjoying the opportunities presented by our new players to build a strong squad and a strong culture.”

Last season Pride struggled with numbers due to injuries and the lack of an intermediate youth competition between the Seniors and the U15s.

With the introduction of an U17s competition and the addition of several as yet unnamed new signings, Kitching said the returning players were reacting well to the increase in player depth.

“They have embraced the challenge for positions knowing the quality is high within the group,” Kitching said.

“The first team has settled and they have shown real excitement in their training.”

Pride have also been buoyed by the return of Ella Roosen whose 2016 season was ended after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Olympic last June.

Kitching said Roosen was up to 3 months away from returning to competitive football.

“Ella came to training 2 weeks ago, and is at the stage of straight running,” Kitching said.

“She will always have a spot within the playing group and we are hoping to see her at least play a few games this year.”
