Western Pride FC have been recognised for their on- and off-field achievements after picking up two major awards at the City of Ipswich Sports Awards Dinner on Friday night.
Sport Ipswich awarded the club Sporting Organisation of the Year, noting Pride’s strong commitment to community engagement.
Pride was praised for successfully running school football clinics in the region and trialling the ‘Learning with Pride’ primary school literacy program which teaches students reading and exercise are an important factor in successful learning.
Sport Ipswich also noted Pride’s participation in the Good Sports program run by the Australian Drug Foundation whereby the club provides healthy food choices and a safe environment for their players.
Senior Men’s coach Graham Harvey shared the Coach of the Year award with distinguished athletics mentor Diane Sheppard.
Sport Ipswich said Harvey received the award award after his success in developing young players, which culminated in Harrison Sawyer, Hayden Mchenery and Joe Duckworth joining Brisbane Roar Youth in the last 12 months.
On the field Harvey fashioned competitive performances from a very young Pride side whose continued improvement was rewarded with a run of wins to close out the season.
Sport Ipswich is an Ipswich City Council initiative dedicated to assisting Ipswich sporting organisations to provide quality sports and recreation opportunities and helping to promote these opportunities to the community.
The City of Ipswich Sports Awards recognises athletes, clubs, coaches, officials, volunteers and sponsors who have contributed to sport in the city.
This year’s winners came from a range of sports including karate, cricket, hockey, athletics, tennis and golf.
The night’s major Senior Sportsperson of the Year award went to Ipswich’s Olympic silver medallist Leah Neale.
Western Pride would like to congratulate all winners and nominees, and thank all those involved in community sports for helping to build a healthy and active Ipswich.
Pride would also like to thank all the club’s players, parents, coaches and volunteers for the time, effort and dedication in 2016.
