Western Pride opened their pre-season with a 5-2 away win over Sunshine Coast Premier League finalists Beerwah Glasshouse on Sunday afternoon.
Joe Duckworth and Andy Pengelly led Pride to an early lead before a brace from ex-NPL striker Jacob Fulluck levelled the scores after the break.
However, a Bee Gees own goal and a pair of strikes from Pride trialists saw the defending NPL Champions start their title defence preparations with a win.
With several seniors unavailable, Pride gave 2017 youth players Pengelly, Aaron Midkiff, Peter Khemis, Alex Parsons and Matt Haspels the opportunity to step up.
Pengelly’s goal continued his form from the 2017 season in which he won the NPL Youth Men Golden Boot with 33 goals.
Young defenders Haspels, Khemis and Midkiff were given the chance to deputise for Hayden Mchenery, who is currently on loan at New Zealand club Hawkes Bay United.
Pengelly, Parsons and Haspels have already been promoted to the senior squad for the 2017 season in keeping with Pride’s policy of youth development.
Nielen Brown and Jordan Lambi added experience to the squad after making their first appearances in the Green and White since being injured in June.
Pride’s next pre-season game is Sunday against former BPL side Logan Lightning, who have joined the new state-wide second division Queensland Premier League for next season
